ahhh i really like when i can put my laptop on my bed without pulling all the cables attached with it. one of my roommates just got a wireless router and we all could get access to internet wirelessly!!! i'm really tired today from reading too much geog 310's reading assignments. now in the mood to write i guess.
so recently i just found out that its that time of the year again. we're reaching the end of Ramadhan and soon Aidilfitri arrives. as i surfed into facebook, twitter, ym etc, i could see people wishing selamat hari raya everywhere. the excitement of celebrating Aidilfitri can now be felt in malaysia. for me? well, there's not much to think about raya here, because i have experienced it last year. not everything here reminds me of raya, except that i have raya song to listen to. i could still remember at this time during last year, i was weeping at the corner of my bed in totem. at that time i felt lonely when i'm alone in my room, since this was the first time i got separated from my family to a far away place. yeah the attachment was too strong at that time...but now its different. i have everyone now in vancouver and i know my way around this time. besides i have people to accompany me whenever i feel lonely. but that does not matter here. mira told me today that this year's raya is not going to be as exciting as last year's. we had masak2 together at the senior's house making us, the juniors felt welcomed. we even had lots of celebrations (cg's open house, our own open house etc) making us felt like home again. i don't really mind actually if there's not going to be any celebration this time around, what's important to me is that people can get together again during the special day. like the spirit of Aidilfitri in malaysia, muslims go home to see their relatives and ask for forgiveness from everyone. it does not matter if they come from a poor or rich family, its the togetherness that binds them all. that makes our hari raya memorable, spending it with our loved ones, people that we know or once knew, be it without any large kenduris or masak2...but, since we don't really see each other now, lets hope that we can make something together this time around okay?
speaking of ramadhan, this year i had the chance to perform the terawikh in ubc. although i missed teh tarik right after terawikh, this time i got to experience a new thing, cycling in the cold to get a piece of the night performing ibadah. i tried my best to do as much as i can, since its quite tiring to do it every night. i was glad to see some of my fellow muslim friends who i spent time with when i was in first year. even muhsin is now one of the imams in the surau making me even more impressed!
huaa im getting sleepy now but i'm still in the mood to write!
life in vancouver is becoming hectic again. soon its winter and days will be short again. and gloomy. i promised myself not to neglect my duties again. especially to God. in malaysia i had everyone to remind me of those things, but here im on my own. when i was in malaysia i heard many people saying many things to me about life as a muslim student everywhere in the world. some of those i'd like to include here. im not saying that im perfect either. just some thoughts to be pondered upon:
"dalam berdakwah tiada paksaan. sbg pelajar tak perlu begitu fanatik smpai dilupakan pelajaran"
"duduk jauh2 kat overseas semangat gile nk cari makanan halal tapi tak pakai tudung (in this case tak tutup aurat) ape gunenye?"
"camne orang boleh tunaikan puasa penuh2 tapi sembahyang tak pernah penuh?"
still have 4 days(or is it 5?) before raya. i've not been able to call home using skype since our house had to be renovated due to constant black out at home (i could call home but mak preferred to see my face too haiya). listening to raya songs already while reading my geog assignments and addicted to 'sepasang kurung biru' again. in case you were wondering what that is, its a raya song by khairil johari johar. okay i think i blabbered a lot tonight. gonna finish up my readings and go to bed. hoping for a good day tomorrow...

my 2nd yr begins here
being in vancouver brings a lot back to me. moderate temperature, nice people, and familiar smell. started to move things in during the last 2 days and boy it was so tiring!
now im in marine drive, one of the most modern and luxurious residence in ubc. the view was very outstanding, since this place has just completed its renovation from last summer. ive already met my roommates, one had been staying here since last winter and practically had bought everything in the house, including a flat screen lcd tv!!!!(yay). the fridge was full though, maybe i have to borrow shahrir's space downstairs...now have to start to live on my own now! starting with shopping i-dont-know-when-is-it-gonna-be!
life should be familiar from now on. ive tasted this life a year before. even to fast and raye here. im a second yr now, became a senior that has to help the juniors. glad to see some old friends from last year's classes, who went to their separate ways after the end of last yr...
nevertheless, this is going to be like last year. lots of works, tutorials and stuffs. first day at school, the imagine went well with the club im helping attracted a lot of people. there're more challenges to come in the future. really hope that i will not go haywire this time. im stronger. thats because i have an extra supporter now ;)
im so proud of u sayang.

the things that we shared...
back when the days were simple and easy, we had everyone here in menjalara. we had eiman, eliya, tasha, fazrul, hana, izzul, afiq, izzud, hariz and me. we were neighbours, living just around the corner. we met each other usually during the evening where we played together. there were memories that we had together but the most memorable ones were during ramadhan. yeah, i could still remember the times we had, as this played a big part in shaping our childhoods. ramadhan for us was the best time to get together. we did almost everything together, from morning till evening. knowing when ramadhan was going to start, everyone got excited. if i'm not mistaken, we started this 'tradition' when i was in standard 4. hariz and afiq was a year younger than me, while eiman and eliya were so little back then. fazrul was the oldest, and tasha (not by age!) and hana were older than me.
our days began quite the same actually. we started our day with sahur at home (of course la). and then as we didnt know what to do we went to the nearest surau to perform the subuh prayer(serius x tipu). usually before that someone would be in charge to call each and everyone of us. izzul was gladly the one who called us, and the hardest persons to call out were eliya and eiman. they were still little (just started school) and they slept in the living room just near the front door(still, it took us minutes just to wake them up). we prayed at the surau and came back to hang out in front of our houses. eiman would put a mat in the middle of the road and we played uno cards. everyone had left to work already so it was quite in the morning. usually eliya would throw tantrum because he kept on losing the game. i remembered him saying:
eliya: ahh aku ni asyik kalah je! aku tak nak main la!
and then he dashed back into his house while we continued playing. fazrul was like the one who put down any fights that occurred between us, usually between izzul and eliya. eiman was the loyal one. he kept listening to us and did what we told him to do. he even brought us things that we needed for our games. we finished playing at about 8am. sometimes we played fire in front of my house, finding everything that can be burned. we even boiled a bottle of water in the process!
after that, everybody went home and slept. woke up in the afternoon to sometimes go to izzul's and afiq's house and played their ps1. we played multiplayer games, and as usual eliya whined about not winning the games haha. other days we played saidina (or was it monopoly?) at hana's house until evening. then we went out to play baling selipar with everyone. wondering why i was so good in this game? thats because my childhood was filled with this game! however, there were some good players. afiq was fast, so did izzul. hariz (at that time) and fazrul were too skinny to be hit. and the usual targets were eliya and eiman, and the girls. this brought back memories whenever i saw people playing baling selipar.
and then there was terawikh. as we had only a surau near our house, (there was no masjid around) we went there. the surau was so small, i remembered praying outside the surau as it was overcrowded. we were like an army of kids going to war(in this case semayang) back then. so noisy and kecoh. everybody kept shooshing at us to keep quite while there were praying. thats why we were relegated to the back of the surau haha.
one day, after all those days, fazrul n tasha came up with a get together after terawikh. we brought our own foods and drinks and shared them with others. that night was so enjoyable, since we got to eat a lot(of course) while playing baling selipar(tak boring ke?). we had the 'dinner' in front of my house. we even had a picture of all of us taken. note that we had a banner in the picture. it was written 'hands of friendship' done by fazrul and tasha.
it was a very lively childhood memory during ramadhan, at that time i hoped to experience the same things again even after i've grown up. it's been more than a week now into ramadhan and i couldn't see everyone again like before. some had moved out of menjalara, and some are doing their studies outside. the street in front of my house is empty now, no more kids playing outside screaming for his/her friend's name, no more cries, no more walking to terawikh and subuh, no more everything that we did when we were kids, just quite neighbourhood. however, the things that we shared will always be remembered as ones that shape our lives for the future. rindu dow!!!
